“Be
of good cheer” pretty well sums up the 2009 season at The Santa Fe
Opera from the opening toast “Libiamo!” in La Traviata, to the
life-giving Elixir of Love; from Don Giovanni’s bubbling Champagne
aria, to the whiskey drinking members of the Singapore Club in The
Letter. Alceste alone does not imbibe!
Three of the world’s
greatest sopranos grace the Santa Fe stage in these produtions:
coloratura Natale Dessay in her first performances as the courtesan
Violetta in La Traviata; dramatic soprano Christine Brewer sings
Alceste in the story of a wife who offers her life in exchange for that
of her husband; and lyric soprano Patricia Racette plays a wife trapped
in a murder cover-up in the Malayan jungle, in the world premiere of

Desirée Mays presents nightly
talks at The Santa Fe Opera’s Preview Buffet during the season and
continues to lecture on opera to lead Act 1 Tours worldwide. She is a
radio host and author of program notes for opera companies.
Is
the call to spirituality embedded in human biology? Authors Nancy K.
Morrison and Sally K. Severino draw on cutting edge research including
the recent discovery of brain “mirror neurons” and the elucidation of
the physiology of social affiliation and attachment to make a bold case

Nancy K. Morrison is associate professor of
psychiatry at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center,
where she serves as director of both residency training and
psychotherapy training.
Sally K. Severino is professor emeritus
of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Severino is certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association
and served as the first woman president of the American College of
Psychoanalysts.
