Resources
for Small Press & Self Published Authors
SELLING YOUR BOOK TO PAGE ONE
While personal computers and desktop publishing software have certainly
made it easier to self-publish, the resulting increase in the number of
books published each year has created a real challenge for bookstores.
We simply do not have space to stock every title that is presented even
from the largest publishers.
Acceptance of a book into our inventory depends on a number of factors. Key requirements include:
* An ISBN number.
* Distribution by a major distributor which will accept returns.
Non-returnable books will not be accepted. Almost all bookstores
throughout the country have accounts with Ingram and with Baker &
Taylor. If your book is available through either and is returnable,
that will increase your chances of having it appear in a bookstore. We
do not stock print on demand books.
* No minimum order requirements.
* Retail price that's in line with similar books published by major publishers.
* Standard trade discount of at least 40%.
* Professional printing and binding with a professional looking cover and interior. No spiral bindings.
* Subject matter that our buyers believe will sell here.
If you are a local author and if Ingram or Baker & Taylor carries
your book and you'd like to send us some information, you can send an
email to comments@page1book.com or a letter to Small Press Buyer, Page
One Bookstore, 11018 Montgomery NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111. All
information will be forwarded to the appropriate buyer. Be sure to
include pertinent information about the author, title, ISBN, publisher,
and retail price.
If you would like to
drop off or send us an examination copy, which will not be returned to
you, our staff will make a decision as to whether your book meets our
sales needs and will be in touch with you only if we decide to buy it
directly from you.
CONSIGNMENT
Another way you can sell your books at Page One, especially if they are
not stocked through Ingram or Baker & Taylor, is through consignment.
Through consignment you can promote your books locally and sell them at Page
One without having to deal with major publishers or distributors. We ask
that you print out and fill in our consignment form and bring it back to us
along with copies of your book. For more information, see the consignment
form.

EVENTS FOR SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHORS
We would encourage all self-published authors to meet at Page One's
Self-Publishing Fair, which takes place on the first Saturday of every
month in the Page One Cafe from 3 to 5 p. m. It's an opportunity to
network and promote and learn from other self-published authors. You
can invite your friends to meet you in our cafe. Then you can sign and
sell your book directly to them. Call 294-2026 x3070 for more
information.
